4. During the Interview

The interview will take approximately 15 minutes and will be facilitated by two UQ staff members. Panel members may take notes so they can assess your responses accurately and provide useful feedback.

You can expect:

  1. A welcome and introduction from the panel.
  2. A brief question about you and your future field of work.
  3. Behavioural questions about your Employability Award experiences.
  4. A question about applying your developed capabilities in future work.
  5. An opportunity to ask the panel a question.

Behavioural questions often begin with: 鈥淭ell us about a time when you鈥︹��

Use the STAR technique to structure your response:

  • Situation: Briefly describe the context.
  • Task: Explain your responsibility, goal or challenge.
  • Action: Describe the specific actions you took. Focus on your contribution.
  • Result: Explain what happened and any tangible results of your actions.

Where relevant, finish by linking the example to your future:

  • Which capability did you develop?
  • How could you use it in your future field of work?

Spend most of your response describing your actions, results and application to future work. These provide the strongest evidence of your capability development.

If you need support

It is normal to feel nervous or need time to think. During the interview, you can:

  • ask the panel to repeat or rephrase a question
  • pause briefly before answering
  • ask to return to a question
  • clarify which part of the question you should address
  • respond to prompts inviting you to provide more detail.

The panel may ask follow-up questions such as:

  • 鈥淲hat did you do personally?鈥�
  • 鈥淲hat was the outcome?鈥�
  • 鈥淗ow could you apply that capability in your future work?鈥�

These prompts are intended to support you to communicate your own experience fully. Use them as an opportunity to strengthen or clarify your response.

If a technical issue occurs during a virtual interview, let the panel know and rejoin using the original link. You will not be disadvantaged by difficulties outside your control.
